Round 3 of the Maxxis British Championship at Lyng in Norfolk took place on Sunday. Despite heavy rain fall during the lead up to the weekend the track was in great condition. Light rain during the day on Sunday also came and went not causing too many problems.
Route77energy MVR-D Honda riders had different goals coming into the event. Young Bradley Pocock had demons to face at a track that in his previous 2 visits ended in serious injury. It is something that has been on the mind of the rider and Team, over the last few weeks especially.
Bradley crashed in qualifying reasonably heavily and knocked the wind out of himself. He also bruised his kidney and liver and was in some pain. It was considered to pull him from the event but there was a mental block that needed to be overcome. He rode in some pain and struggled to breathe correctly. Race one he battled to 15th before the pain kicked in and he dropped out of the points but still finished the race. He went out again in the second MX2 moto and for the most part was in and around the points before he had to back it off. The goal of seeing the chequered flag, it was decided that he sit out race 3.
MX1 riders Gert Krestinov and Jason Dougan went to Lyng looking for solid points. Gert, looking to bank solid results and remain near or in the top 5 of the Championship. Only bad luck at Canada Heights where a rock striking the brake calliper put an end to his race, the only bad result so far. Jason Dougan on the other hand needed a strong weekend to put him up the Championship table.
Qualifying went well for Dougan who set the 2nd fastest time in Q1 and then dropped one place in the superpole to 3rd. Krestinov took some time to adapt to the fast track and went from 7th to 10th after the superpole lap.
Race one of the MX1 Dougan started well in 5th and moved into 4th on lap 1. He stayed in that position riding smoother than he has in previous rounds. Just over half way Jason had a small clutch problem and lost one place but was reasonably happy with 5th. Gert who started outside of the top 10 had an eventful race stalling the bike a couple of times but kept his head down to claim 6th at the finish.
Race two, again Dougan started well and was this time in 5th place. Lap 3 though, he hit a large hole and over extended his wrists. His left, which he had an operation on last year, gave shooting pains and he knew that he had injured it in some way. Jason finished 10th in the race but it was decided that it would be the end of his day. Gert again started badly and was outside of the top 15 early on. He kept moving forward and got through to 9th by the end.
Race three Gert started better and pushed on early passing several riders. He got into 5th which was a better result and performance than the first 2 races. Overall the weekend for Gert wasn’t so bad, as he moved into joint 5th in the series.
“I didn’t have a good feeling this weekend and it took a long time to get into the track. We changed some things on the bike but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference. I was happier with the last race and the Championship position isn’t so bad”.
“I’m pretty disappointed as I felt good this weekend. I hope that it isn’t too bad and I can race the first Redbull but until I get a scan I don’t know”.
“Lyng has never really been a good track for us for some reason. Jason showed good promise early in the day and it’s a shame he hurt his wrist. He will have a scan on Wednesday and then we will make a decision on what we do next. Gert struggled in the first 2 races today and we struggled to get him happy. The last race he rode much better and his Championship position isn’t too bad. Bradley did well to get through the weekend as mentally it was always going to be tough. I was pleased with his grit and attitude”.
